* On December 13th 2009 it was reported in the press that the Government was backtracking on some of their proposals, by changing the criteria for applying the act. The effect has been to reduce the number of people requiring to be registered from 11 million to 9 million. Big Deal! Bluntly, this is a typical piece of government fudging which leaves the act in place and with it all the costs and disruption to the lives of those who look after children and have to conform to all the checks and those who are thinking of doing so, but are deterred by the act. All the disadvantages of this misguided piece of legislation still apply.
